28 Feb The Perspective of Experience
Dr. Yi-Fu Tuan is a professor of Geography at the University of Minnesota. In Space and Place: The Perspective of Experience, Tuan maintains that however confrontational, experience is part of a transformational process that changes where we see things from. A space requires a movement from a place to another. Experience changes and enriches our starting point. These new experiential perspectives enable different vantage points, and new spaces and places to come together.
“Experience is the overcoming of perils. The word ‘experience’ shares a common root (per) with ‘experiment,’ ‘expert’ and ‘perilous.’ To experience in the active sense requires that one venture forth into the unfamiliar and experiment with the elusive and uncertain. To become an expert one must dare confront the perils of the new” (p. 9).
